About the Artist
My name is Abby Thomas. I am 20 years old and am a Junior with an intended BFA in Communication Art & Design at the University of Louisville, KY. My hometown is in Northern Kentucky (Crestview Hills). My family consists of my two loving parents, my sister Kristen (25), and my brother Peter (24). I am newly engaged to my best friend, Andrew. I love the outdoors though I don't get out of the city much. I am a skier, a novice guitar and ukulele player, and a recreational volleyball player. I am part of Catholic Campus Ministry, and recently completed work with UofL Campus Housing as a Design Intern and Desk Assistant. On weekends I enjoy watching movies, playing games, and hanging out with friends.
Being an artist is a way of life for me. I have always been interested in art; I would color with sidewalk chalk, draw connect-the-dots pictures, etc. In grade school, I used to stay after school to work on my art projects (even though it probably wouldn't affect my grade). I even set up a to-scale model of my cousin's room to find the best way to re-arrange it.
The first time I recognized my passion and skill as an artist was when I graduated 8th grade. I received the Jon Gallenstein Scholarship for exhibiting a positive outlook on art and its ability to affect and serve a community. I continued taking art classes in high school and loved it. I applied and was accepted admission into Kentucky's Governors School for the Arts (GSA) during my Junior year. That summer, I spent 3 weeks at Transylvania studying Architecture with many other passionate young artists in many other concentrations. It was the best summer of my life thus far.
As much as I loved learning about Architecture, I was drawn towards Graphic Design. I took a half credit Graphic Design course in high school and job shadowed at LPK, an international design agency. These 2 experiences showed me the possibilities of a career in Graphic Design. And so I accepted full tuition and a spot in the Honors Program at the University of Louisville. College is what you make of it, and I intend to make the most of my time at UofL. I have met some amazing people thus far, and can't wait to see what my future holds!
