Intro to Graphic Design
Project 1: From Trash to Pattern
In this project, we were supposed to find and photograph a piece of trash. Then, we abstracted the photograph to create a pattern module. After exploring many variations of pattern making, we picked one and incorporated a word with it.

Project 2: Word, Image, and Mark
Here, we discussed the what it meant to have purely a word, image, or mark. We then were randomly selected to make some combination of the three using 2 random words (mine being a combination of word and image, with more emphasis on the word). My words were "boots" and "vociferous".

Project 3: Quote Poster
The project was to make a cool poster with an assigned quote. We were inspired by Container Corporation of America's quote poster series. My quote: "Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body" (Joseph Addison).

Project 4: Shakespeare in the Park
Next summer (2015), Louisville's Central Park will be the outdoor theater to 3 Shakespeare plays. My job is to create a poster to advertise the event. I played around with a lot of different layouts, until finally making a decision. I decided to combine the concept of theatre and park using theatre masks and park flowers.

Project 5: Invention Booklet
The class is starting to delve into designing systems rather than single images. Directions: create a booklet about an invention; 8 pages, black and white, up to 12 images. Printed on 8.5" x 11" paper.

Project 6: Dissent
How do you portray the idea and implications of a word? In this project, we were only given the word "dissent" and told to visually portray it in however we deem fit. I started by thinking of the meaning of the word, and played around with some ideas. I really liked the symbol of the tie to show dissent in the workplace or perhaps political dissent. I included a dress shirt in the background to give a context in a subtle way. I did not include a face so that the image would be relatable to more people.

Project 7: Quote Layouts
This project has 3 parts to it. First, we were given a quote from Eric Partridge and were directed to display it in a way that is Old English Style but still fluid and interesting. Next, we treated the quote as body copy, as if a page in a book (still in Old English Traditional Style). We were more concerned with the layout than the actual text, and I may have repeated the quote for visual purposes. Finally, we were inspired by Jan Tschichold's early work to create a Bauhaus-style body copy.

Project 8 - Comets
Inspired by the recent accomplishment of NASA landing on a comet, we decided to design 5.5"x8.5" booklets about comets, our audience geared towards college-aged students. In my design, I tried to use a mix of Traditional Style with Modern tendencies. I decided to start with Traditional Style because of its scientific implications, inspired by old texts about astronomy. According to this, I centered the front cover, and included mostly black and white images. However, I broke this style with the use of bold, colorful lines and experimental layouts for body text and images to try and connect with the younger audience, and make the reading of a very dry subject more energetic.
