Project 1: Garbage Bag Sculpture
For this project, we were to make an inflatable sculpture out of only 12 clear garbage bags. Our 3 person group went through many ideas (willow tree, palm tree, wedding cake, etc) before finally settling on a birthday cupcake. This project was definitely a learning process for all of us. We started out with rough sketches, then created a plan of how to cut and seam the garbage bags. We created a model sculpture out of paper to work out any potential problems. Similar to a clothes designer, we cut patterns for the bags. Using a hot iron, we melted the garbage bags together under a sheet of paper. Our final project was a bit rough in my opinion, but our group learned a lot in the process.

Project 2: Wire Sculpture
Initially we were assigned to come in with simple drawings of our worst fears. Then we were paired in teams of 2 to solder a wire sculpture including one or both of the partner's fears. Gwen and I decided to make a sculpture of a snake coming out of an airplane barf bag (which would include her fear of snakes and my fear of vomit). With guidance, we learned how to sauder and continued to create a sculpture. Though hesitant at first, I found that soldering could be fun, though challenging. I am overall happy with our result, but even happier with the new skills we learned in the process.

Project 3: Cold Glass
After spring break, our class started meeting in downtown Louisville at UL's Cressman Center for glass. Here, our class was instructed in cold glass. We learned about cutting, grinding, sanding, glueing, and polishing glass. We were lucky to have access to many expensive machines. The project description is simple: make something cool out of glass bottles. Using wine bottles, a peanut butter jar, a vinegar bottle, and a sheet of clear glass, I created an abstract piece that I am proud of.

Project 4: Shoe Mold
Our final project was to make a plaster mold of an object to blow hot glass into. We learned about mixing plaster and how to successfully make a mold which the glass would come out of. We did the mold in 2 parts so that we could easily get glass into and out of the mold. I used an old Sperry shoe for my mold - a modern take on Cinderella's glass slipper. While happy with my final project, I only wish I had taken more time to sand and smooth the glass.
